Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 - Release Date: Sep. 9, 2014
In our distant future, Mankind has explored and settled on planets and satellites around our star system. In this time, we had encountered the Traveller, and with it ushered the pinnacle of our civilization with large advances in technology in space exploration and genetics. This time was abruptly halted when a force called The Fallen had laid waste to all colonies and Earth, save for the last city to be saved by the Traveler. A new era has begun centuries later, and needs new Guardians to explore the Earth and beyond- this is where we come in.
Few people from the City travel outside of its walls; even fewer manage to return alive. With the right equipment, weapons, and people, it is our job to discover the history of our future's past. Traverse the abandoned civilizations of the Earth, the Moon, Mars, Venus, as well as satellites that orbit Jupiter and other locales.
Players begin their journey after being resurrected by their Ghost in Old Russia. Their first task is to reach the Tower, the residence of other Guardians in the Last City, then get acquainted with the desolate environments filled with Fallen, Hive, Vex, and Cabal enemies. Going through all campaign missions should allow for Guardians to reach level 20 and unlock more than half of the powers for the subclass of choice used to hold back the Darkness.
Guardians can also go on Patrol as a way to traverse the environments at their leisure, tackle quick missions or join a Public Event to defeat the enemies of the Last City with nearby Guardians.
Strikes are standalone missions built for fireteams of three to stand against some of the most resilient of foes. Players can gain access to these missions after completing story missions, then can create or join a fireteam to take on the 'boss-type' enemies. In case players want to get better gear to progress their character past level 20, the Vanguard Strike Playlists, Weekly Heroic Strikes, and Nightfall (level 28 with numerous game modifiers) Strikes will up the ante with enemy difficulty and other modifiers to hopefully grant Legendary or even Exotic gear.
Raids are to be the ultimate test in teamwork and coordination. A fireteam of six can currently attempt to defeat all Vex that are currently safeguarding the Vault of Glass; this fireteam must prevent the hyperintelligent robotic race from altering the fabric of time to control all of what they have discovered. This requires players to have enough armor to reach level 26 and fully modified rare weapons (if not legendary weapons) to stand a chance against the enemies within the Vault.
The Crucible, otherwise known as competitive multiplayer, is built into the lore as the Tower's way to allow Guardians to sharpen their gunfighting skills. Players must reach certain ranks and talk to the Crucible Quartermaster, Lord Shaxx, once the rank has been obtained in order to join other Guardians in heated competition. Clash is a 6v6 Team Deathmatch mode that encourages teams to divide their fireteams to conquer the map through covering all routes into the territory they cover. Combined Arms is a 6v6 Team Deathmatch that also includes vehicular gameplay and larger maps to compete in. Control is a 6v6 Zones-based mode that gives teams more points for each kill they score in a defended area. Rumble is a Deathmatch mode- be on guard, as an excessive amount of Super abilities will be used to wipe out as many in proximity as possible. Salvage is a 6v6 objective-based mode where fireteams must seek and defend their ghosts while the relics are being salvaged. Skirmish is a 3v3 Team Deathmatch-based mode that encourages fireteams to stick together or gamble a bit to have one Guardian sneak around and flank while the others keep them busy. Weapons and Armor stats are modified in the traditional games, save for the matches set in the Iron Banner, where Guardians that emerge victorious at the end of the round receive additional rare weapnry, armor, and other goods to use anywhere in the game.
